About the Business

History

Established in 1937.

Galvin Appliance was established in 1937 by Earl Galvin and was located on University Avenue in Berkeley.  Twenty years later Mr. Galvin retired and sold the business to one of his long time employees, Ralph Pease. Mr. Pease moved the store to Hopkins Street in Berkeley (currently the Monterey Fish Market).  In 1976 Mr. Pease retired and sold the Business to Dallas Allen (the current owner) who then moved the store to a larger building in Albany.

Meet the Business Owner

Dallas A.
Business Owner

I come from a lifetime in the Appliance Business.  My Father  worked for Hink's  (remember that name?) for 25 years as their Appliance Reconditioning Expert. I remember going to work with him on Saturdays when I was a child and helping him in his shop.

After finishing High School my Dad and I started our own Used Appliance Business in one of Hink's warehouses  and it was there that my Dad taught me everything he knew about repairing and reconditioning Appliances.  When he died a few years later I had learned enough to make a living reconditioning appliances myself.

Ralph Pease owned Galvin Appliance at the time and would stop by the shop to check  on me from time to time.  It was during one of these visits he mentioned to me that he was ready to retire and move out of the area  and offered to sell the business to me.  We worked out a deal and Galvin Appliance lives on.

I'll soon be celebrating my 40th year in the Appliance business and and 35th year as the owner of Galvin's.
